Brewers looking to s Joe Carter Jersey et Opening Day roster

HOUSTON — With several spots in the bullpen still to be determined, the Brewers haven’t set their 25-man Opening Day roster.

“There’s a lot of player movement at this time in the industry, so that’s why every team kind of stays flexible until they absolutely have to,” manager Craig Counsell said before Tuesday’s 8-1 loss to the Astros in an exhibition game at Minute Maid Park.

At the end of Spring Training last year, the club added Justin Smoak Jersey Jared Hughes. The year before, Carlos Torres was a late spring signing.

This year, not counting a pickup before Thursday’s season opener in San Diego, five Brewers are fighting to make the roster to start the 2018 season.

Relievers Taylor Williams, Oliver Drake and J.J. Hoover are competing for two available spots, along with first basemen Jesus Aguilar and Ji-Man Choi. Aguilar and Drake are out of options. Williams and Choi are non-roster invites.

Being on an Opening Day roster is the goal, but players are constantly being called up during the regular season for a variety of reasons.

“Opening Day is an important, symbolic day certainly for the players and standing in [for pregame introductions] means something,” Counsell said. “But we used 50 players last year and we’ll use 50 players again this year most likely. So a lot of the guys that are the last guys to leave are usually the first guys to come back.”

Anderson honored to start
After turning Blue Jays Jersey Red  the corner in 2016, followed by a breakout year in ’17, Chase Anderson‘s career has progressed to where the right-hander will be the Opening Day starter on Thursday against the Padres at Petco Park.

“I was excited and honored to get that nod for the first game,” Anderson said. “You don’t take those lightly. I’ve been progressing in the right direction for a year and a half. It’s going to be fun to start the season off and getting our team off on the right foot. As each hour goes by, it’s getting more exciting.”

Video: LAD@MIL: Anderson talks about his fifth spring start

Adding a curve and a cutter has been instrumental in Anderson’s rise. In 2016, Anderson was 9-11 with a 4.39 ERA and 12-4 with a 2.74 ERA in ’17.

“The curveball has gotten better, the cutter is another weapon for me and my changeup is still there,” said the 30-year-old Anderson. “You have more confidence going out there wh Mitchell and Ness Joe Carter 1993 Toronto Blue Jays Cooperstown Collection Authentic Light Blue Throwback Jersey en you have more weapons. When you have that, you build confidence.”

Anderson has added about four miles per hour on his fastball.

“There’s not one thing that I can pinpoint that helped me with velocity,” Anderson said. “The curveball got better just because I changed the grip, and got us Men’s Joe Carter Jersey Majestic Flexbase Authentic 14 Justin Smoak Toronto Blue Jays Alternate Royal Blue Jersey ed to that. And the cutter as a fourth pitch has been a weapon. It’s been nice to adapt and get those pitches do something for me and help me out to get to this next level.”

Santana struggling
Domingo Santana‘s struggles at the plate this spring aren’t a concern for Counsell, who is more interested in the outfielder’s track record tha Women’s Toronto Blue Jays Josh Donaldson Majestic White Flex Base 40th Anniversary Patch Jersey n how he performed in the Cactus League.

Santana, who dropped a routine fly ball in right field for a first-inning error on Tuesday, came into the final exhibition game batting .192 with 10 hits in 52 at-bats.

Video: COL@MIL: Santana crushes a solo homer to deep center

But Santana’s rough spring shouldn’t affect his playing time in the regular season.

“It didn’t change anything at all,” Counsell said. “It didn’t change anything I perceived going into the season at all. This part of the season, we’re not playing for wins and losses. You can insert a name of the player that’s struggling in Spring Training because there’s going to be player at the bottom of the list of the statistics.

“If we thought Spring Training was a huge indicator of success, we’d do Spring Training a little differently. When I talk about a player, what happens last year matters. In Domingo’s case, what’s happened in the past matters, not just last year. He had a really good season. He’s a young player. It would be crazy for us to abandon that.”

Last season, the 25-year-old batted .278 with 30 home runs and 85 RBIs.

New outfield for Brewers’ Joe Carter Jersey Opening Day lineup

PHOENIX — After winning the Cactus League, the Brewers will try to win some games that matter.

With six weeks of spring preparation in the books, manager Craig Counsell’s club is entering a season of expectations with some notable reinforcements. Lorenzo Cain and Christian Yelich should fortify the lineup and the defense, and Jhoulys Chacin is the lone newcomer to a starting rotation that many observers expected general manager David Stearns to do more to fortify.

The club did not get through Spring Training without some notable injuries. Catcher Stephen Vogt (right shoulder) and reliever Boone Logan (left triceps) will open on the disabled list with ace right-hander Jimmy Nelson, whose rehab from shoulder surgery continues. The Brewers also lost non-roster left-hander Wade Miley to a groin injury while he was on his way to cementing a spot in the starting rotation.

Still, Counsell deemed camp a success.

“I think we’re leaving in a good spot,” he said. “We anticipate having injuries, you know? You have to anticipate having injuries, so you prepare for them. That’s part of depth.

“Catcher sits on its own island a little bit, but we’re healthy on the position-player side. That’s going to take us into the regular season with a really deep position-player group. We’re going to have a lot of good choices every day.”

Projected Opening Day lineup

1. Lorenzo Cain, CF
2. Christian Yelich, RF
3. Ryan Braun, 1B
4. Travis Shaw, 3B
5. Domingo Santana, RF
6. Manny Pina, C
7. Jonathan Villar, 2B
8. Orlando Arcia, SS
9. Chase Anderson, RHP

Key roles

• Cain and Yelich figure to hit atop the order, though they could flip-flop depending on the opponent. Their bat-to-ball skills made them enticing to the Brewers, who set Major League Baseball’s all-time strikeout records each of the past two years. Yelich’s natural power should play much better at cozy Miller Park than it did in Miami.

“Shaw said, ‘You’ll see,'” said Yelich. “That’s where they leave it at. It’s not a bad hitters’ park, that’s for sure. Mitchell and Ness Joe Carter 1993 Toronto Blue Jays Cooperstown Collection Authentic Light Blue Throwback Jersey ”

Video: MIL@OAK: Yelich homers, knocks in four runs vs. A’s

Corey Knebel set strikeout records and made the National League All-Star team after the Brewers installed him as the closer last season, but he might not be the team’s best reliever. That distinction might wind up going to Josh Hader, who didn’t allow a single run during the Arizona portion of Spring Training while striking out 16 batters vs. two walks. Counsell will have to decide how best to deploy his lefty weapon.

“The question is always going to be with Josh, ‘Six outs and days off, or back-to-back and three outs?'” Counsell said. “That’s the question that we’re going to have to answer. Sometimes the game will tell you what the answer to the question is.”

Video: Counsell discusses Hader’s role out of the bullpen

• Braun gets the nod Joe Carter Jersey  on Opening Day because the Brewers face Padres left-hander Clayton Richard, but Braun’s precise role remains an open question. If he plays first against left-handers, it still leaves a majority of games for Counsell to juggle Braun, Cain, Santana and Yelich in the outfield. The Brewers put it in the category of “good problem to have.”

Video: CWS@MIL: Braun fields a grounder at first base

Injury Updates

• Nelson will join the team in San Diego before heading home to Milwaukee to continue his throwing program. If he continues to progress, Nelson could get back on a mound sometime in the middle of April, at which point the Brewers would have a much clearer timetable for his return to the rotation. Besides the timing, the question is whether Nels Blue Jays Jersey Red on will be able to return to his stellar 2017 form following major shoulder surgery.

• Vogt and Logan project  Justin Smoak Jersey for early-May returns to big league action. Both are potentially important pieces because they are left-handed, Vogt a hitter and Logan a reliever. Logan in particular was a notable offseason addition because his presence could free Hader to pitch wherever Counsell deems best in the game.

• Miley, who worked out a deal to stay with the Brewers on his Minor League contract, should beat Vogt and Logan back. Miley will rehab in Phoenix until he can make rehab starts, at which time he can elect free agency if the Brewers don’t have a spot for him in the big leagues. Josh Donaldson Jersey Losing Miley was a blow to the starting rotation, where the club eschewed the big free agents and will try to win instead with depth.

Brett Phillips liken Joe Carter Jersey s himself to squirrel

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — “Just imagine me as a squirrel,” said Brett Phillips, and he’s going somewhere with this, so let’s hear him out.

First, some context: Phillips put up an .851 OPS over the final month of the 2017 season in the thick of the Brewers’ pennant chase while making a series of Statcast-worthy throws from center field, and he entered the offseason with a chance to play a prominent role for the Brewers in ’18. He still could very well do that, but Phillips’ path to the Opening Day roster was, shall we say, complicated by the late-January additions of Lorenzo Cain and Christian Yelich to an outfield that already included Ryan Braun and Domingo Santana. Phillips, it seems, is bound for Triple-A Colorado Springs.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — “Just imagine me as a squirrel,” said Brett Phillips, and he’s going somewhere with this, so let’s hear him out.

Phillips, it seems, is bound for Triple-A Colorado Springs.

He has said all the right things this spring about remaining optimistic and being a good teammate, with actions to match. But before he connected for his first spring homer against the Rockies on Tuesday, Phillips was hitting .098 after his first 41 Cactus League at-bats. He finally showed the first hint of frustration when he kicked the dirt on his way back to the dugout after striking out against the Dodgers on Sunday.

So, back to the analogy. The squirrel.

“No, listen. Pay attention to detail here,” Phillips said. “Imagine me as a squirrel, and in the fall he gathers up all his nuts and stores them away. I worked hard in the fall to gather all my nuts, and here comes the spring, and next thing you know, I forgot where I hid them. My hits, my nuts. So I’m just trying to un-dig them.

“It’s looking like they’re probably behind the dugout in Colorado Springs, or in the clubhouse. I don’t remember being there in the offseason to bury them, but I think that’s where they’re probably going to be at. Which is fine. I’ll go get them. I’ll gather my nuts and I’ll be eating again.

“That’s basically where I’m at.”

:: Spring Training Justin Smoak Jersey  coverage presented by Camping World ::

Yes, Phillips concedes with a smile, there is frustration.

“As a competitor, I don’t want to be where I’m at,” Phillips said, “but thank God it’s not going on the back of my baseball card.”

That sentiment did not surprise Brewers manager Craig Counsell, who said he was surprised the other day when he noticed Phillips’ low batting average. By the eye test, according to Counsell, Phillips’ at-bats have not been that bad.

“If I were Brett I’d be saying, ‘I’m glad this happened during the spring and not during the season,” Counsell said. “He’s 40 plate appearances into 2018, and I’ll tell you this: Everyone wants to be locked in going into the first day of the season, and then on the first day of the season, everything that happened in Spring Training becomes irrelevant to the players.”

Video: Top Prospects: Brett Phillips, OF, Brewers

Does Counsell think Phillips’ poor results are tied to disappointment over the team’s offseason additions?

“I don’t really think it is,” Counsell said. “Look, was he affected by our moves this winter? Certainly, he was affected. Regardless, would he have been a lock on the team? No, he would not have been a lock on the team. There would have still been a lot of considerations.”

Phillips, the Brewers’ No. 6 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, vowed to keep plugging away. Then he went out and smacked an eighth-inning go-ahead two-run home run off Colorado’s Jairo Men’s Majestic Flexbase Authentic 14 Justin Smoak Toronto Blue Jays Alternate Royal Blue Jersey  Diaz in his first plate appearance on Tuesday.

“That guy was throwing absolute laser beams, missiles, probably from one of the newer gene Josh Donaldson Jersey ration-type model spaceships,” Phillips said after the final out of a 4-4 tie. “Honestly, I couldn’t see it. So it was a matter of swinging as soon as he got started. Luckily, I was able to square it up. Thank God.”

He called it “something to build on.” Even before Joe Carter Jersey connecting against the hard-throwing Diaz, Phillips was looking for reasons to stay positive.

“Obviously, it’s not where anyone wants to be,” Phillips said, “but I’ve still got six months ahead of me that actually matter. I’m just using this to grow through and get ready for my season.

“Like a squirrel.”

“It’s a credit to him and to our front office as well,” manager Craig Counsell said before Monday’s 5-2 loss to the Astros in an exhibition game at Minute Maid Park. “We’ve all worked together with Chase in trying to figure out where he’s at his best, what makes him at his best.

“He’s worked hard on developing his curveball and delivery. And added velocity in his delivery. He’s a player that’s worked hard to get better.”

Anderson, who will make his first Opening Day  Joe Carter Jersey start, will be the fifth pitcher to start the opener for the Brewers in five seasons, joining Yovani Gallardo (2014), Kyle Lohse (’15), Wily Peralta (’16) and Junior Guerra (’17).

Suter on target
With seven strikeouts and no walks over five innings, Brewers starter Brent Suter was putting Astros batters away early in the count, while limiting his number of pitches.

“My cutter was moving a little more than it had been the last couple of outings, so I was going with that a lot,” Suter said. “Changeup early felt pret Men’s Majestic Flexbase Authentic 14 Justin Smoak Toronto Blue Jays Alternate Royal Blue Jersey ty good, but later it was fading too much. But overall, I felt solid. That’s a really good lineup.”

It was a good performance for Suter in his final tuneup before the regular season starts on Thursday.

“Ready to go,” Suter said. “Felt I got back on the right track, and ready to get the season going. We’re all excited.

“That was their ‘A’ lineup. You look at that top five, six guys. There’s not a breather there. Really not a breather overall. It was a good challenge for me and I’m glad I was able to make my pitches when I had to.”

Regular season feel
As Thursday’s season opener against the Padres at Petco Park nears, playing two exhibition games in Houston starts to have more of a regular season atmosphere.

“This [Monday] is a very good day for the players,” Counsell said. “Because it’s different and we’re in a big league stadium. So they get excited about today. Can’t say the same about tomorrow.

” Mitchell and Ness Joe Carter 1993 Toronto Blue Jays Cooperstown Collection Authentic Light Blue Throwback Jersey This is a game you look forward to playing in. Erceg got back on track in Minor League camp after a lidocaine injection, and he has been working with athletic trainers on a routine to navigate the regular season.

“Ever since then, I’ve been doing a bunch of hip mobility, core stability, all that stuff that gets me ready for each day,” Erceg said. “It’s been feeling a lot better. It feels good to be out there pain-free. As of right now, it feels like I’m 100 percent.”

:: Spring Training coverage presented by Camping World ::

Likely to open the season at Double-A Biloxi, Erceg has been called over to play in four Cactus League games, singling twice in his first five at-bats. He played a much more prominent role last year in his first professional Spring Training, hitting .417 with a 1.190 OPS in 24 at-bats, including a pair of home runs in one memorable game against the Indians.

His splashy spring might have had a downside, Erceg said. He entered the 2017 season at Class A Advanced Carolina envisioning a quick promotion to Double-A, and perhaps beyond.

Instead, Erceg posted a .561 OPS in April and .631 OPS in May, and wound up with a .250/.278/.404 slash line before a season-ending stint at Triple-A Colorado Springs and then the Fall League.

“For me to go out there and have that much success, then start off the season as slow as it did, it was hot water and cold ice clashing together,” Erceg said. “This whole process is a learning experience, whether it’s good or bad. Domingo German picked up a three-inning save with another scoreless outing, while Billy McKinney and Tyler Austin provided the offense, combining to go 3-for-7 with an RBI and two runs scored.

German, the Yankees’ No. 18 prospect, continued his strong spring with another dominant outing. The right-hander, who hasn’t given up an earned run in four of his six appearances, struck out two over three perfect innings.

McKinney, the No. 19 prospect in New York’s system, did his damage early, putting the Yankees on the boar Toronto Blue Jays Custom Jersey d with a solo shot in the second. McKinney finished 1-for-4 and is hitting just .171 in Spring Training, but power hasn’t been an issue, as five of his six hits have been homers.

The 23-year-old, who is hitting .365 this spring, finished a homer shy of the cycle as he went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs. Astros No. 9 prospect J.D. Davis is hitting .347 after his latest multi-hit performance. Davis went 2-for-3 and drove in a run, but the Astros ultimately fell to the Marlins, 15-7.

Brewers No. 6 prospect Brett Phillips appears to have found his rhythm at the plate. Phillips, who went 1-for-3 with a homer, is 3-for-7 with two homers over his past three games after getting off to a slow 4-for-41 start.

Pirates No. 8 prospect Colin Moran continued his solid spring with a three-hit effort against the Blue Jays. Moran, who went 3-for-5, is slashing .333/.360/.396.

Tigers No. 10 prospect Christin Stewart hasn’t seen a ton of playing time this spring, but when he’s gotten a chance, he’s been able to hit. Stewart went 3-for-5 in the Tigers’ win over the Phillies, and not only is he batting .700 (7-for-10), but he also has a hit in all five games he’s appeared in.

Brewers’ W Devon Travis Jersey ade Miley has slight groin tear

PHOENIX — With their initial MRI results in hand, Boone Logan was slated for further medical tests Thursday while the Brewers worked through contractual complications with Wade Miley. But it was clear that both left-handers are out of the running for the Brewers’ active Opening Day roster.

Logan, who had been ticketed for the Brewers’ bullpen, suffered a left triceps strain in Wednesday’s win over the A’s and will open the regular season on the 10-day disabled list. Miley, who was vying for the starting rotation as a non-roster invitee and was on the cusp of making the team before  Joe Biagini Jersey sustaining a left groin strain in the same game, will be shut down at least two weeks after an MRI scan revealed a slight muscle tear.

“This is unusual timing. We have a player who had an injury the day before decisions had to be made,” said general manager David Stearns, referring to a Thursday “out” in Miley’s Minor League contract.

By day’s end, Stea Men’s Majestic Flexbase Authentic 33 J A Happ Jersey Toronto Blue Jays Alternate Royal Blue Jersey rns and Miley’s agent, Tom O’Connell, had an agreement to keep Miley in the organization while he rehabs. The Brewers Men’s Majestic Flexbase Authentic 29 Devon Travis Toronto Blue Jays Home White Baseball Jersey  will pay Miley the $100,000 retention bonus he’s due Saturday as a veteran non-roster invitee, and he will remain on his Minor League contract.

Had he made the Brewers’ Major League roster on Opening Day, even on the disabled list, Miley would have been guaranteed a $2.5 million salary, with an additional $3.2 million available in incentives.

Brewers manager Craig Counsell lamented the “cruel timing” of Miley’s injury. Miley called it “unbelievable,” and indicated first thing Thursday morning that he hoped to stay with the organization.

“Obviously, I wouldn’t put a hurt guy on the roster, so we have to get through J.A Happ Jersey  some stuff like that,” Miley said. “I’m open for anything. Obviously, there’s not people handing out jobs right now anywhere else. I love it here, so hopefully we can work something out.”

With Miley sidelined, the Brewers have left-hander Brent Suter and right-handers Junior Guerra and Brandon Woodruff in camp vying for rotation spots behind Chase Anderson, Zach Davies and Jhoulys Chacin. Suter, Guerra and Woodruff each have Minor League options.

Suter and Guerra are also candidates for the bullpen, which has five of eight spots spoken for with Logan out of the mix. Among the other bullpen candidates is a right-hander who is best against left-handed hitters and also happens to be out of options, Oliver Drake.

Logan does not expect to have a firm timetable for recovery until next week, perhaps while the Brewers are in Houston for exhibition games ahead of Opening Day in San Diego. That’s when the team would have to place Logan on the 10-day DL.

The good news, Logan said, is that the injury is not in exactly the same area as the left lat tear that derailed his 2017 season in Cleveland. It’s essentially in his armpit — close enough, Stearns said, to demand further tests.

“The initial feedback is that it’s pretty minor,” Stearns said. “Certainly, our hope is that this is just a blip. We get him a little bit of downtime and he comes back.”

Tweet from @AdamMcCalvy: Brewers are still working out a deal to keep Wade Miley, David Stearns tells us. “I’m optimistic we will get it done but nothing at this point.”

“That actually put a smile on my face that it wasn’t that,” Logan said. “Hopefully it won’t be that long, but I don’t know.”

As of Thursday, the Brewers were one week shy of their regular-season opener against the Padres in Men’s Majestic Flexbase Authentic 31 Joe Biagini Toronto Blue Jays Red Scarlet Canada Day Jersey  San Diego.

“It’s what you have to prepare for, and it’s why you have numbers,” Counsell said. “I feel good about covering for it, and then [Logan and Miley] become Toronto Blue Jays Custom Jersey  depth during the season, and really good depth.”

Brewers’ 25-man roster projections Devon Travis Jersey for OD

PHOENIX — One week to go, and new circumstances for Brewers officials to consider as they ponder their Opening Day roster.

Injuries have knocked Wade Miley from the starting rotation and Boone Logan from the bullpen, forcing general manager David Stearns, manager Craig Counsell and their staffs to take a fresh look at how they will construct a 25-man roster for the season opener against the Padres on March 29 at Petco Park.

“It’s two less guys,” Counsell said. “We’ll keep open different ways to construct [the  Joe Biagini Jersey roster], but when you take away one guy that was a lock on the team and one guy who was certainly under strong considerations, it moves some other guys up. And it also makes us look at different ways to put it together.”

The Brewers are leaning toward beginning the season with only four starting pitchers, since they will not need a fifth starter until the eighth game. That helps a little, but it still leaves plenty of question marks for an outsider attempting to guess how things will look on Opening Day.

Here’s another stab at it:

Catcher (2): Manny Pina and Jett Bandy
March 15 projection: Pina and Bandy
Pre-camp projection: Pina and Stephen Vogt

Vogt will start the season on the disabled list with a shoulder injury. That cleared a path for Bandy.

First base (3): Eric Thames, Jesus Aguilar and Ryan Braun
March 15 projection: Thames, Aguilar and Braun
Pre-camp projection: Thames and Braun

Video: LAD@MIL: Braun laces an RBI double to left field

Yes, that’s still too many first basemen. But the Miley and Logan injuries were a good reminder that it’s best to delay decisions until the last possible moment, and the Brewers could try to hold onto Aguilar as long as possible.

Second base (2): Jonathan Villar and Eric Sogard
March 15 projection: Villar and Sogard
Pre-camp projection: Villar and Sogard

Villar was having a nice camp as of the one-week-to-go mark, slashing .326/.383/.442.

Third base (1): Travis Shaw
March 15 projection: Shaw
Pre-camp projection: Shaw

Shortstop (1): Orlando Arcia
March 15 projection: Arcia
Pre-camp projection: Arcia

Arcia extended his Cactus  Men’s Majestic Flexbase Authentic 31 Joe Biagini Toronto Blue Jays Red Scarlet Canada Day Jersey League hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the first inning on Thursday. Shaw leads the team with four spring homers.

Outfielders (3): Lorenzo Cain, Domingo Santana, Christian Yelich (and Braun)
March 15 projection: Cain, Santana, Yeli J.A Happ Jersey ch (and Braun)
Pre-camp projection: Cain, Santana, Yelich (and Braun)

After two months of trade speculation, it looks like Santana will make it to Opening Day with the Brewers.

Utility (1): Hernan Perez
March 15 projection: Perez
Pre-camp projection: Perez

Mr. Versatility just needs to catch and he will have played every position in the Majors.

Starting pitchers (4): Chase Anderson, Zach Davies, Jhoulys Chacin, Brent Suter
March 15 projection: Anderson, Davies, Chacin, Wade Miley
Pre-camp projection: Anderson, Davies, Chacin, Brandon Woodruff, Suter

Video: MIL@SEA: Suter fans Cano to strike out the side

Suter could take Logan’s spot in the bullpen, but Stearns said the team would choose Suter’s role independent from Thursday’s injury news. Junior Guerra and Woodruff are the other options for that fourth starter spot, but since Suter opened the spring with a “leg up,” as Counsell put it, we’ll go with him.

Bullpen (8): Corey Knebel, Josh Hader, Matt Albers, Jacob Barnes, Jeremy Jeffress, Yovani Gallardo, J.J. Hoover, Oliver Drake
March 15 projection: Knebel, Hader, Boone Logan, Albers, Barnes, Jeffress, Gallardo, Hoover
Pre-camp projection: Knebel, Hader, Logan, Albers, Barnes, Jeffress, Gallardo, Hoover

Video: CLE@MIL: Drake jumps off mound to barehand grounder

Drake isn’t a left-hander, but he’s out of options and gets left-handed batters out (.685 OPS last season), so he could fill Logan’s spot to start the season. The hope, Stearns said, is that Logan will not miss too much time. Taylor Williams, the electric-armed righ Devon Travis Jersey t-hander, remains in play for one of the final bullpen spots.

Ryan Braun wi Devon Travis Jersey ll play some first for Brewers

MESA, Ariz. — Pleased with Ryan Braun‘s work at first base this spring, the Brew Men’s Majestic Flexbase Authentic 31 Joe Biagini Toronto Blue Jays Red Scarlet Canada Day Jersey ers will push forward with a plan to occasionally start the longtime outfielder at the position this season, primarily against left-handed pitchers.

The Brewers face southpaw Clayton Richard of the Padres on Opening Day on Thursday in San Diego. So, barring an unforeseen issue in the next six days, Braun will be the Brewers’ Opening Day first baseman.

MESA, Ariz. — Pleased with Ryan Braun‘s work at first base this spring, the Brewers will push forward with a plan to occasionally start the longtime outfielder at the position this season, primarily against left-handed pitchers.

The Brewers face southpaw Clayton Richard of the Padres on Opening Day on Thursday in San Diego. So, barring an unforeseen issue in the next six days, Braun will be the Brewers’ Opening Day first baseman.

“That’s investigative journalism,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said.

The Brewers hatched the plan in January while they were pursuing outfielders Lorenzo Cain and Christian Yelich, players who should help improve the team’s defense and cut down on the lineup’s strikeouts. It created a crowd Men’s Majestic Flexbase Authentic 33 J A Happ Jersey Toronto Blue Jays Alternate Royal Blue Jersey , with four premium outfielders — Braun, Cain, Domingo Santana and Yelich — for three spots. Adding first base to Braun’s repertoire should help Counsell spread at-bats around.

:: Spring Training coverage presente Toronto Blue Jays Custom Jersey d by Camping World ::

“You’re not going to transform a player to an experienced player and a completely comfortable player in five games worth of action,” Counsell said, “but he’s handled himself very well from our perspective.”

When Braun assessed his progress about halfway through camp, he was blunt, saying he was not “remotely comfortable” at first base. At the time, Braun was still using his outfield glove. He has since switched to a traditional first baseman’s glove, logging 41 innings at the position over eight Cactus League games.

Braun will get one final tune-up at first base in one of the Brewers’ upcoming exhibition games in Ho Men’s Majestic Flexbase Authentic 29 Devon Travis Toronto Blue Jays Home White Baseball Jersey uston, Counsell said.

“I think he has the skills to play the position,” Counsell said. “Like I said before, I understand why he’s uncomfortable with the rest of the stuff. You’re not going to be comfortable until you’ve done it a whole bunch, and there’s still plays that haven’t happened. The way he thinks about the game, that makes him uncomfortable. That’s right. I can completely empathize with that.

“But I think he’s shown enough that we think he can be a contributor there.”

Video: Braun challenged by position switch to first base

Comfort will come in time, Counsell predicted.

“It’s the little dribbler up the line that the runner is coming at you and the pi J.A Happ Jersey tcher throws it and you can’t see the ball,” C Joe Biagini Jersey ounsell said. “It’s, ‘How far can I get away from first base with a right-handed hitter up?’ It’s a push bunt from a fast runner. It’s not the ground balls, it’s not the throws from the infielders, it’s the stuff that you try to practice, but it doesn’t happen that much, so it’s a surprise when it happens.”

Still unsettled is how adding Braun alongside primary first baseman Eric Thames will impact another player, Jesus Aguilar. He is out of Minor League options, making a minimum salary and would almost certainly be plucked off the waiver wire after hitting 16 home runs with an .837 OPS in 311 plate appearances last sea Devon Travis Jersey son.

“We’re trying to find a way to get him on the roster, Counsell said.

If he makes it, how would the Brewers use Aguilar?

“That’s why we’re having this conversation, because there isn’t a clear spot for Jesus if Ryan plays first base,” Counsell said. “But could there be quickly? I don’t know what’s going to happen. … We have to make some decisions on our depth here coming up here, but we’re still going to try to preserve it.”
