Brewers to call up J Atlanta Braves Custom Jersey unior Guerra for start

ST. LOUIS — The Brewers are calling up right-hander Junior Guerra from Triple-A Colorado Springs to start Wednesday’s game vs. the Cardinals, manager Craig Counsell told reporters Tuesday. The club has not yet announced a corresponding move.

Guerra, the Brewers’ 2017 Opening Day starter, allowed one run in 5 2/3 innings in his first start of ’18 for the Sky Sox. The 33-year-old hurler went 9-3 with a 2.81 ERA in 20 starts in ’16, but struggled last season, going 1-4 with a 5.12 ERA in 21 games (14 starts).

“We think Junior had a really good camp, had a great first start in Colorado Springs,” Counsell said. “So I’m excited to see him start tomorrow and feel like he’s one of our guys.”

Guerra is set to oppose St. Louis right-hander Adam Wainwright, who allowed three earned runs in 3 2/3 innings on April 5 against the D-backs.

“It’s a new opportunity for me this year,” Guerra said. “I try to do my job, I feel good.”

It isn’t clear whether Guerra’s callup will be a spot start or something more permanent.

“It’s kind of active as we’re doing it,” Counsell said. “We have to wait to see what the game gives us and kind of dictates where we’re at, roster-wise and need-wise and we’ll go from there.”

Brewers center fielder Loren Men’s Authentic Atlanta Braves Personalized Alternate Jersey Red for Sale zo Cain left Monday’s game in the top of the ninth after tripping over Jose Martinez‘s heel while beating ou Men’s Personalized Stitched Atlanta Braves Authentic Road Gray Jersey Sale t an infield single.

Cain has a strained left quad and was out of the lineup Tuesday night.

“He’s a little sore, but we’ll play it day by day,” Counsell said. “We have an off-day on Thursday so we’ll Personalized Braves Jersey Cheap take that into account, but it’s not a DL at all.”

Cain said he could have played Tuesday if needed.

“We’re being cautious right now, taking advantage of an off-day which we’ve got coming up here in New York,” Cain said. “So take a few days off and be ready to go in New York, hopefully.”

Cain’s injury, coupled with Christian Yelich being on the disabled list, has left the Brewers’ outfield in flux, at least in the short term. The team needs to make a roster move Wednesday  Women’s Custom Any Name Any Number Atlanta Braves Authentic Home White Baseball Jersey to make room for Guerra and the outfield situation could affect that.

“We’ll play the game tonight and I’ll let you know,” Counsell said. “Hernan’s [Perez] played center field before, that’s a possibility as well. We’ve got choices out there.”

Brewers Atlanta Braves Custom Jersey ‘ bullpen faces fatigue problems

“The ninth inning is certainly harder,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. “The other team is going to pull out all the stops, strategically and personnel-wise, and the last three outs are the hardest outs, there’s no question about it. We know that. We know those are a hard three outs to get.

“I think, as much as anything, we’ve asked so much from the bullpen that we have to rest guys, so that’s going to put us in some funky spots from day to day a little bit. We have the guys to close games, but we’ve got to make sure that they’re in a good position to do it.”

Matt Carpenter‘s third career walk-off home run against J.J. Hoover (0-1) finally ended the four-hour, two-minut Men’s Authentic Atlanta Braves Personalized Alternate Jersey Red for Sale e contest and made Dominic Leone (1-2) the winner.

Video: MIL@STL: Carpenter cranks a walk-off homer in 11th

“It just leaked m Personalized Braves Jersey Cheap aybe a little bit over the middle,” Hoover said. “I think he was kind of sitting on it too. I like to go to my curveball back door to lefties and have had a lot of success with it, but I think it might have just leaked over a little bit and he was able to get out and pull it.”

Hoover was one strike away from ending the game in the Brewers’ favor in the 10th, but walked Yairo Munoz, which sparked a two-out rally culminating in a Custom MLB Jersey Cheap  Greg Garcia RBI single to tie it at 3.

“The biggest mistake of the night was walking Munoz,” Hoover said. “Other than that, it was a lot of weak contac Custom Braves Jersey t until Carpenter’s [homer].”

After a dominant eighth inning, reliever Taylor Williams started the ninth but gave up a leadoff walk to Tommy Pham, who eventually scored on a pair of Jacob Barnes wild pitches to tie it, 2-2.

“Taylor Williams, I sent him out there for the ninth because he had a great eighth inning,” Counsell said. “I thought if there was any trouble, I like Jacob shorter in that inning because he’s been worked pretty hard and I thought a shorter stint would be good for him. He just threw a couple bad pitches  Women’s Custom Any Name Any Number Atlanta Braves Authentic Home White Baseball Jersey to start the inning and they tied it up there.”

Aside from Knebel’s absence, workload is becoming an issue.

Milwaukee relievers have already thrown 9 2/3 innings in the last two games. They’ve combined for 21 innings in the last five games.

“We had some guys that were down today,” Counsell said. “We’ve covered a lot of innings in the bullpen, so we’re having to put guys in different places right now, and we’ve had an injury in the back of the bullpen, so we’re putting guys in different places.”

Brewers starter Brent Suter was unhittable through 4 2/3 innings. Mixing a variety of off-speed pitches with a mid-80’s fastball, the lefty kept the Cardinals batters off balance.

Video: MIL@STL: Suter gets DeJong looking in the 1st

It took the Brewers just two batters to do something they couldn’t manage in 8 1/3 innings against Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez six days ago … score a run.

Eric Thames took care of that with one mighty swing of the bat, drilling a 0-1 changeup 411 feet into the right-field bleachers to give the Brewers a 1-0 lead.

“When Eric gave us that run in the first inning, it was a good boost,” Suter said. “We had that lead for, it felt, a lot of the game. It was a great swing by him.”

Video: MIL@STL: Thames opens the scoring with a solo homer

Domingo Santana and Orlando Arcia each gave the Brewers one-run leads with RBI singles in the ninth and 10th, respectively.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Jeffress bests Ozuna, again: For the second straight night, Counsell summoned righty Jeremy Jeffress to face Marcell Ozuna, the Cardinals’ best hitter, in a key spot. And for the second straight night, Jeffress struck Ozuna out to strand a deciding run. On Tuesday, that moment came in the seventh, when Jeffress caught Ozuna looking with two on and the game tied at 1. Ozuna also stranded the winning run at second with a groundout in the ninth.

Munoz walks, part two: While Hoover’s walk of Munoz in the 10th jump-started the Cardinals’ rally, another Munoz walk in the sixth weighed heavily on the outcome as well. This time, Munoz drew the free pass from Oliver Drake with the bases loaded, tying the game at 1-1 and giving Munoz his first career RBI.

There was no need for a corresponding move, because Milwaukee had already optioned reliever Adrian Houser back to Double-A Biloxi following Sunday’s 3-0 loss to the Cubs.

“We had an off-day yesterday,” Phillips said. “Rick Sweet, our manager, called and with Yelich going on the DL, he said it might be a short stint. But it’s something. I’m super blessed to be back in the big leagues.”

How long Phillips sticks with the team remains to be seen.Custom MLB Jersey Cheap  Partly by choice and partly because of key injuries to Yelich and closer Corey Knebel that necessitate time on the disabled list, the Brewers have an extremely fluid roster at the moment. Monday marked the fourth straight day that a player was summoned from the Minor Leagues.

Another callup is likely on Tuesday night or Wednesday, when Milwaukee needs a starting pitcher for the series finale against St. Louis. He would work in place of Brandon Woodruff, wh Personalized Diamondbacks Jersey o was optioned to Triple-A on Saturday because the Brewers needed a fresh reliever.

“You have to prepare yourself to be out of your suitcase so to speak,” Counsell said. “And know that you’re going to have a little bit of a strained schedule for the season. That’s the boat some of these guys are in. In one sense it’s challenging from their perspective, but it’s also the big leagues and it’s also something that when you have a lot of young players with options, you hope you can put together a strong roster every day, and some games it’s helpful.”

Phillips, Milwaukee’s No. 6 prospect per MLB Pipeline and one of only two 80-grade arms on Top 30 Prospect lists across baseball (Shohei Ohtani is the other), was 1-for-7 with a triple and seven walks to begin the Minor League season. Phillips had a .143 batting average and a .571 on-base percentage through his first four games for the SkySox.

After an outstanding showing in the Major Leagues last September while the Brewers were in the postseason hunt (.934 OPS after Sept. 12), Phillips was the odd man out after Milwaukee added outfielders Yelich and Lorenzo Cain, and he was one of the team’s final cuts in Spring Training.

“I know what’s expected of me,” Phillips said. “Obviously, the atmosphere, last year coming up and getting those first-year flaws and butterflies out of the way was big, so coming up this year I know what to expect.”

Also optioned to Triple-A Women’s Custom Any Name Any Number Arizona Diamondbacks Home White Authentic Jersey  at the end of Spring Training was outfielder Keon Broxton, who had a four-hit game as part of Colorado Springs’ Opening Day doubleheader and owned a 1.115 OPS in his first 16 Minor League plate appearances. Vogt making progress

Catcher Stephen Vogt (shoulder) felt good after two straight days of throwing. Monday was an off day and he will throw again Tuesday.

“He had a really good day y Men’s Customized Arizona Diamondbacks Road Gray Authentic Baseball Jersey Cheap esterday,” Counsell said. “You feel like you’re in a spot where you can get yourself in a program, you know what to expect and he can keep taking forward steps to this thing.”

What to know about the Brewers-Cardinals game

The National League Central is shaping up to be one of baseball’s most competitive divisions this season, and the Brewers and Cardinals are expected to be right in the Personalized Diamondbacks Jersey thick of it. Wednesday’s matchup on Facebook Watch is the finale of a three-game set at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals won the first series between these division rivals, taking two of three games at Miller Park last week.

The Brewers had yet to name a starter for the game as of Monday afternoon, but right-hander Adam Wainwright will toe the rubber for St. Louis. The veteran hurler recovered from the hamstring injury that delayed his season debut, but struggled with command and velocity issues in the Cardinals’ home opener Thursday. He lasted just 3 2/3 innings, surrendering three ru Men’s Personalized Arizona Diamondbacks Home White Authentic Baseball Jersey Cheap ns on four hits and four walks in the 3-1 loss to the D-backs.

Both clubs have new faces entering the mix for this series. The Brewers’ recalled outfielder Brett Phillips, the club’s No. 6 prospect per MLB Pipeline, from Triple-A Colorado Springs on Monday to replace injured outfielder Christian Yelich‘s left-handed bat. He’s one of only two 80-grade arms on Top 30 Prospects lists alongside the Angels’ Shohei Ohtani, but the offseason additions of Yelich and Lorenzo Cain kept him off Milwaukee’s Opening Day roster.

The Cardinals, meanwhile, will welcome recently acquired right-hander Greg Holland to the back end of their bullpen. On Monday, they recalled Holland from Class A Advanced Palm Beach, where he pitched in two games in preparation for his Cardinals debut. The three-time All-Star, who signed a one-year deal March 30, saved 41 games for the Rockies in 2017, tying the Dodgers’ Kenley Jansen for the NL lead.

ST. LOUIS — Life without closer Corey Knebel is getting rather interesting for the Milwaukee Brewers. Or gut-wrenching, depending on one’s perspective.

On Monday, the Brewers absorbed their second blown save since placing Knebel (strained right hamstring) on the disabled list on April 6.

But unlike Saturday’s loss, in which the Cubs put up a four-spot while capitalizing on Milwaukee errors, the Brewers were able to limit the damage and regroup to scratch out a 5-4 win in 10 innings to start a three-game series against the Cardinals.

The latest blown save had more to do with poor luck rather than shaky defense.

Matt Albers was victimized by a Paul DeJong infield hit and a perfect Kolton Wong bunt for a single to load the bases with nobody out. Albers got pinch hitt Men’s Personalized Arizona Diamondbacks Home White Authentic Baseball Jersey Cheap er Greg Garcia to fly to shallow center, but Dexter Fowler followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 4.

“One broken bat and a perfectly-placed bunt, it was bases loaded and no outs,” Albers said. “That was in my mind, if I give up one right here it would at least give us a chance to come back.”

Aided by four Greg Holland (0-1) walks, including one to Orlando Arcia with the bases loaded, the Brewers did come back in the 10th inning.

Albers (2-0) pitched a perfect bottom half to earn the decision.

“He gives up a single and Wong made a great bunt obviously,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. “Bases loaded and nobody out to give up one run, he’s making a lot of quality pitches — he  Arizona Diamondbacks Custom Jersey did a nice job.

“Then we had a strange inning in the next inning, obviously, with a bunch of walks to score a run. To  Men’s Customized Arizona Diamondbacks Road Gray Authentic Baseball Jersey Cheap leave it at one run, bases loaded nobody out, that’s kind of what does it right there.”

Domingo Santana‘s second-inning single off the glove of a diving DeJong scored Travis Shaw and snapped the Brewers’ 11-inning scoreless streak. Arcia’s two-out double scored Santana, giving Milwaukee an early 2-0 lead.

Manny Pina‘s two-run single in the fourth regained a 4-3 lead for the Brewers. Eric Sogard had a pair of doubles and singled and scored and Shaw had a double and a single and scored twice.

Video: MIL@STL: Pina knocks two-single to right-center field

Control issues prevented Brewers starter Jhoulys Chacin from getting through the fifth. Chacin walked a season-high three batters in 4 2/3 innings, and just 43 of his 83 pitches were strikes.

The Cardinals capitalized on Chacin’s wildness in the third, sending eight batters to the plate and scoring three times as 20 of the right-hander’s 34 pitches in the frame were out of the zone. Chacin walked all three of his batters in the inning, including Tommy Pham and Matt Carpenter back to back to load the bases, before Marcell Ozuna‘s two-run single gave the Cardinals a 3-2 lead.

Fowler led off the fifth, reaching on an Arcia error, making it eight straight games that Milwaukee committed a fielding miscue. Jeremy Jeffress, pitching in relief of Chacin, prevented the error from hurting the Brewers by striking out Ozuna to strand Fowler at third.

Jeffress, Hader and Barnes combined to pitch 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief for Milwaukee, before Albers finished it off.

“With Corey being down, a couple of us have to step up and take that role on and I feel good doing that,” Albers said.

Team first:
Sogard went 3-for-4 to raise his average more than 150 points to .222. Even his out to left in the second was hit hard. But with two on and no outs in t Personalized Diamondbacks Jersey he 10th, he had the choice to try to either swing away or bunt. He chose the latter, dropping it perfectly down the third-base line to advance the runners, leading to the Brewers’ game-winning run.

“I had to get the job done,” Sogard said. “I had to get him over to third with less than two outs.”

Out stretching, twice: The Brewers’ outfield arms set the tone early against the Cardinals with assists in each of the first two innings. In the first inning, center fielder Lorenzo Cain threw out Fowler trying to stretch a single into a double. In the second inning, left fielder Ryan Braun threw out Ozuna trying to turn a double into a triple. Both plays came against leadoff batters in each inning, thwarting potential rallies.

“When you’ve got a double or a triple to lead off an inning, its almost a sure run,” Counsell said. “Double to lead off the game is pressure, and it became a really easy inning after that.”
