PHOENIX — After emerging from a rebuild to be surprise contenders last season, the Brewers know they will play under the weight of expectations in 2018. And that was before they bolstered the outfield with Lorenzo Cain and Christian Yelich.

Now, can they take the next step under that weight?

“Realistically, I don’t think any of us expected to be here this quickly,” said outfielder Ryan Braun, the team’s longest tenured player. “It’s a good place to be. I think it’s motivating and inspiring to all of us to know we’re coming into a season with expectations to win, with a front office and ownership group that now expects us to win. That’s where you hope to be as players.”

It was with the promise of winning in mind that Braun agreed to give first base a try this spring. Getting some at-bats there during the regular season could help manager Craig Counsell spread time to Cain, Yelich and Domingo Santana in the outfield.

Has the project been rejuvenating?

“More than anything, it’s rejuvenating that we’re expecting to win now and we’re expecting to contend,” Braun said. “The challenge of playing a new position … is a challenge I’m looking forward to.”

What’s the goal?
To get back to the postseason for the first time since 2011, but to do it in a sustainable way. That explains why, at a meeting in Los Angeles of owner Mark Attanasio, general manager David Stearns and assistant GM Matt Arnold early in the offseason, the Brewers decided to bolster their developing core by targeting Cain and Yelich, even though it created something of a logjam in the outfield. The Brewers now control both for the next five years, and consider themselves positioned to be competitive at a time other clubs in the division and the National League are rebuilding.

What’s the plan?
Stearns is following a plan similar to other analytically minded GMs: Acquire as many good, controllable players as possible. Beyond Cain and Yelich, consider how many other of the club’s cornerstone players are Brewers property beyond the coming season: Starters Jimmy Nelson, Chase Anderson, Zach Davies and Jhoulys Chacin; relievers Corey Knebel and Josh Hader (among others) and position players Travis Shaw, Eric Thames, Santana, Orlando Arcia and more. With the exception of Chacin, a veteran, one can make the case that most of those players are on an upward trajectory in their careers.

Cain and Yelich represented a bid to improve in two areas: Run prevention and bat to ball skills. Both are plus defenders, which should help the pitching staff, and neither strikes out a lot. The latter trait is needed after the Brewers set Major League Baseball’s all-time team strikeout record in each of the past two seasons.

“Coming into the offseason, going over teams to start the offseason, Milwaukee definitely wasn’t on the list, because I knew they had a good outfield situation,” said Cain, whose professional career began with the Brewers. “I didn’t expect them to call, but once they did, I was definitely open to it and ready to come home. My main goal when I started was to play center field here. I didn’t do it long before I got traded, but now I’m back and ready to do it a little bit longer.”

What could go wrong?
Much is riding on Nelson returning to his 2017 form, when he threw the same number of innings as Clayton Kershaw with a better Fangraphs WAR (4.9 to 4.6). While some pitchers never come all the way back from labrum injuries, Nelson’s is different in that the tear, suffered diving back to first base in a game at Wrigley Field last September, was in the front of his shoulder, and not in the back from long-term wear. That’s a significant difference, said Nelson after conversations with doctors.

If Nelson suffers a  Marco Estrada Jersey setback along the way, or proves less effective than he was last year, the Brewers could struggle to repeat their mound success from last season, when they ranked ninth in the Majors in ERA. Stearns added Chacin on a two-year deal and took low-risk fliers on veterans Yovani Gallardo and Wade Miley, but Gallardo was released and Miley is now rehabbing a groin injury sustained in extending spring training. The Bre Men’s Majestic Flexbase Authentic 11 Kevin Pillar Toronto Blue Jays Alternate Royal Blue Jersey wers don’t have the firepower of the division-rival Cubs, who added Yu Darvish and Tyler Chatwood to a mix that already had Jon Lester, Kyle Hendricks and Jose Quintana.

Nelson is not the only player in danger of regression. Shaw, Thames, San Kevin Pillar Jersey tana and catcher Manny Pina all had career years in 2017, and are being counted on again this season.

Who could surprise?
Junior Guerra would qualify as a pleasant surprise if he can pitch the way he did in 2016. He skipped winter ball at the Brewers’ request that offseason to rest up for Opening Day, got hurt in the third inning and struggled upon getting healthy. This year, he came to Spring Training with a successful winter season under his belt. The question is whether the Brewers will give him a spot Marcus Stroman Jersey in the rotation.

Brewers surprise with O Marco Estrada Jersey pening Day roster

SAN DIEGO — They’re snapshots, really. The anticipation of each baseball season lends an aura to Opening Day Marco Estrada Jersey rosters, but they are really just that. A roster for one game on Opening Day.

The Brewers have proved that with personnel moves following a single regular-season game in each of the past two seasons. And still, it looked mighty strange on Wednesday when the team released its list of 25 players who will step to the foul lines on Thursday afternoon at Petco Park.

SAN DIEGO — They’re snapshots, really. The anticipation of each baseball season lends an aura to Opening Day rosters, but they are really just that. A roster for one game on Opening Day.

The Brewers have proved that with personnel moves Kevin Pillar Jersey following a single regular-season game in each of the past two seasons. And still, it looked mighty strange on Wednesday when the team released its list of 25 players who will step to the foul lines on Thursday afternoon at Petco Park.

This is it:

Pitchers (11): Matt Albers, Chase Anderson, Jacob Barnes, Jhoulys Chacin, Zach Davies, Oliver Drake, Josh Hader, Jeremy Jeffress, Corey Knebel, Brent Suter, Brandon Woodruff

Catchers (2): Jett Bandy, Manny Pina

Infielders (8): Jesus Aguilar, Orlando Arcia, Ji-Man Choi, Hernan Perez, Travis Shaw, Eric Sogard, Eric Thames, Jonathan Villar

Outfielders (4): Ryan Braun, Lorenzo Cain, Domingo Santana, Christian Yelich

Disabled list: Boone Logan, Jimmy Nelson, Stephen Vogt

Yes, that is four first basemen and only 11 pitchers, after talk all spring that the Brewers would carry 13 pitchers for much of the coming year, and angst about whether they could keep out-of-options Aguilar or spring star Choi, with Braun joining Thames in the first base pool. In the end, all four of those players  Blue Jays Jersey Red made the cut.

The final subtractions were relievers J.J. Hoover and Taylor Williams. Hoover, who was charged with one earned run in 10 Cactus League appearances, was a victim of being on a Minor League contract, and will be assigned to Triple-A Colorado Springs. Williams, who also had a stellar camp, was optioned to Triple-A.

In the interest of preserving depth, and to have a reliever ef Men’s Majestic Flexbase Authentic 25 Marco Estrada Toronto Blue Jays Road Gray Jersey Cheap fective against left-handers to replace the injured Logan, the Brewers went with Drake, who is out of options, for the final bullpen spot.

Why the small relief corps? The Brewers enter the season with a fresh bullpen and an off-day coming Easter Sunday, and Woodruff is available in relief for the first four games. He will exit the bullpen for the starting rotation after Monday’s home opener, the start of a stretch of 20 games in 21 days.

Relief reinforcements will be required, and help could come from outside the organization. General manager David Stearns has made last-minute bullpen additions something of a tradition. Last year, he added Jared Hughes on the eve of Opening Day. The year before that, Carlos Torres.

Now, the Brewers are poised to make it three years in a row.

After they set their roster on Wednesday, MLB Network’s Ken Rosenthal reported the Brewers were nearing a deal with left-hander Dan Jennings, who was just released by the Rays. Jennings has a 2.90 ERA over six Major League seasons with the Marlins, White Sox and Rays.

“We’re continuing to explore,” Stearns said. “Obviously, this time of year, there’s a lot of activity. There’s a lot of guys who were either released out of non-roster invite deals or guys who were released out of non-guaranteed Major League deals. I do think we’re getting some traction in that area.”

While they keep working, Choi will enjoy his second Major League Ope Marcus Stroman Jersey ning Day. He made it with the Angels two years ago.

“We thought having the extra position player made sense,” Stearns said. “I don’t know how long we’re going to be able to do this. Clearly, this isn’t something that you can do for long stretches in a Major League season, but Ji-Man had a heck of a spring. The option helps.”

Stearns added, “Ji-Man understands his roster situation. He’s very excited to be on the team on Opening Day. Like any player with options, he understands there is flexibility to go up and down.”

Choi batted .409 in Spring Training with three home runs, including a grand slam.

Video: MIL@LAD: Choi hits a grand slam in the 6th

“This sets our roster for, really, a day. That’s how it works,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. “But, the major contributors could not be here on that day.”

Counsell himself is a good example. When he scored the winning run in Game 7 of the 1997 World Series, he’d never cracked an Opening Day roster in the Majors.

Counsell didn’t have that experience until the following year.

Was it a bit of a letdown?

“It was, frankly,” he quipped. “It was the ’98 Marlins. We weren’t very good.”

New-look Crew Marco Estrada Jersey faces Padres in first chance

When the offseason began, few envisioned the Padres and Brewers as two of baseball’s biggest movers and spenders. Yet the two clubs will open the season on Thursday afternoon at Petco Park — and they’ll do so with a host of new talent.

First baseman Eric Hosmer, who signed a franchise-record eight-year contract with San Diego in February, will take the field at Petco Park for the first time as a Padre Marco Estrada Jersey . He’ll do so opposite former Royals teammate Lorenzo Cain, who signed a five-year deal with Milwaukee. Cain will be joined in the outfield by Christian Yelich, who arrived via trade with Miami.

The Bre Men’s Majestic 6 Marcus Stroman Toronto Blue Jays Authentic Scarlet Canada Day Red Jersey wers, a surprise contender in the National League Central last year, already look like a better team on paper than the 86-win squad from 2017.

“Realistically, I don’t think any of Men’s Majestic Flexbase Authentic 25 Marco Estrada Toronto Blue Jays Road Gray Jersey Cheap  us expected to be here this quickly,” said Brewers veteran Ryan Braun. “It’s a good place to be. You want to enter a spring with expectations, and that’s where we are now as an organization. It’s fun, it’s exciting. It’s motivating and inspiring to all of us to know we’re coming into a season with expectations to win.”

With one of baseball’s youngest rosters, the Padres might be a year or two behind the Brewers in their push toward contention. But the Hosmer addition seems to accelerate that path. (Not to mention baseball’s best farm system, according to MLB Pipeline).

“It’s been a blast for me,” Hosmer said. “I almost felt like a rookie in camp, learning new faces. … It’s been fun, it really has. I’m excited to get things going with these guys.”

Thursday’s pitching matchup features Padres left-hander Clayton Richard against Brewers righty Chase Anderson. Anderson posted a 2.74 ERA in 25 games last season, significantly better than Richard’s 4.79 mark over 32 games.

But the Padres believe their veteran sinkerballer will be aided greatly by an improved infield defense. They added shortstop Freddy Galvis via trade with Philadelphia and third baseman Chase Headley in a deal with the Yankees.

Even though both hurlers are past their 30th birthdays, it’s the first Opening Day start for both. Richard called it a “great honor,” and he waxed poetic about the day’s significance.

“The place is full, the sights, the sounds, the smells that we haven’t had for months — it’s a terrific, terrific time,” Richard said. “It’s so America. I don’t know how else to put it. It’s truly special.”

Did you know?

• Braun will start Opening Day at first base because the Brewers are facing a lefty in Richard. He’s also part of the crowded outfield mix Milwaukee developed by adding Cain and Yelich. Braun got the start at first over the lefty-hitting Eric Thames, who launched 31 homers last season.

“This is a pretty good lineup, man,” Cain said. “There’s a lot of guys who can swing the bat.”

It’ll be Braun’s first Major League appearance at first base.

• This year’s Opening Series marks the first time the Padres a Marcus Stroman Jersey nd Kevin Pillar Jersey  Brewers will square off to begin a season. The Padres own a 21-28 all-time record on Opening Day, while the Brewers are 24-23-1, including a 9-10-1 mark since moving to the National League in 1998. Brewers manager Craig Counsell and Padres skipper Andy Green are winless in two Opening Days apiece. Neither team has won an opener since 2014, when the Padres beat the Dodgers and the Brewers blanked the Braves.

• Legendary closer Trevor Hoffman is slated to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Petco Park. Hoffman, who was elected to the Hall of Fame in January, spent 16 seasons with the Padres before finishing his career with two years in Milwaukee.

Jinri Toutiao looks to Josh Donaldson Jersey For Sale BRICS nations

Jinri Toutiao, a leading news aggregator app, has trained sights on the BRICS
Josh Donaldson Jersey For Sale economies to extend its artificial intelligence-backed business as more people embrace mobile gadgets to receive information and consume content, a company executive said.

Russia is probably the next destination for Toutiao to branch out overseas, after it reaped initial successes in India and Brazil, said Liu Zhen, senior vice-president of its parent company Beijing Bytedance Technology Co Ltd.”We are set to benefit from the ongoing wave of smartphone penetration and growth of the
Kevin Pillar Jersey internet infrastructure in these countries,” Liu said. “We can expand via acquisitions or by building up our own products.”

The app, which translates into “Today’s Headlines”, uses algorithms to scour a massive number of sources to filter news and tailor feeds. It comes as traditional news portals lose their luster in the mobile age and traditional media fails to attract news-hungry users who want to stay up-to-date and relevant.

Last year the five-year-old startup bought a stake in Indian news aggregator Dailyhunt, and introduced the local version of TopBuzz, the company’s English-language news service, in Brazil.

In terms of which path it will take in Russia, Liu said it really depends on whether it can find the right local partner, the one thing to factor in for cross-cultural communication businesses.

Toutiao is also active in reaching out to mature markets, buying US video app Flipagram in February. The case was overseen by Liu, a veteran lawyer and Uber Technologies Inc’s former China strategy chief before joining Toutiao’s senior management late last year.

Aside from emerging markets, “Japan, South Korea, Western Europe and most of
Kevin Pillar Youth Jersey the English-speaking countries are on the top priority of our expansive roadmap,” she said.

Toutiao is the most frequently downloaded news product in China’s iOS App Store, according to market research firm App Annie. The service has garnered 120 million daily active users, who spend an average of around 70 minutes a day on Toutiao.

One major challenge is to identify and customize products that resonate with local people’s interests. For instance, Indian audiences are mostly drawn by music, dance and cricket-related feeds, which is a far cry from the preferences of Toutiao’s domestic users, Liu noted.

And because Toutiao doesn’t have its own staff writers, finding the initial group of curators becomes critical to building enough sets of the data it relies on to

The app aggregates content not just from traditional news outlets, but also video, live streaming, social media and a growing army of individual contributors,

Liu said with the advent of machine learning, AI can broaden people’s horizons by recommending topics of potential interest that go beyond their conventional
