Here’s MLB Pipeline’s roundup of the top prospect performances in the Minor Leagues on Thursday.

The Brewers’ top two prospects showed a bit of why they are so highly-touted on Thursday night.

Milwaukee’s No. 1 prospect Keston Hiura (No. 56 overall) hit his first homer of the season in a 2-for-5 showing with Class A Advanced Carolina while Corbin Burnes (Brewers’ No. 2, No. 69 overall) spun a scoreless start and picked up the win for Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Hiura, who hit .371 in 42 games after he was picked in the first round a season ago, got off to a slow start this season, but he appears to be finding his rhythm. The 21-year-old has hits in four of his past five games, raising his average from .143 to .220 Men’s 1994 Buffalo Bills 35th Anniversary Jim Kelly Mitchell and Ness Royal Blue Throwback Jersey  over that timeframe.

Burnes was impressive from start to finish as he struck out the side in the first inning, setting the tone for things to come. The right-hander notched at least one strikeout in five of his first six innings, ultimately finishing with nine.

Burnes faced one batter in the seventh, got a flyout, then was lifted after yielding three hits over 6 1/3 innings.

Burnes rings up ninth strikeout

Other top prospect performances from Thursday’s action:

• No. 3 overall prospect Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (Blue Jays’ No. 1) is hitting .362/.411/.596 after going 2-for-4 with Double-A New Hampshire. Guerrero has hits in 10 of 12 games this season and has notched multiple hits in five of his past six games. While Guerrero was contributing on the offensive end, Jordan Romano (No. 27) kept Binghamton in check with seven innings of one-run ball.

• No. 23 overall prospect Austin Hays (Orioles’ No. 1) was responsible for half of Double-A Bowie’s offense in a 6-1 win over Richmond. Hays finished just 1-for-4, but he drove in three runs via a sacrifice fly in the first and a two-run homer in the ninth. Cedric Mullins (Orioles’ No. 7) collected a season-high three hits, going 3-for-5, and Keegan Akin (Orioles’ No. 9) picked up his first win of the year as he struck out seven over six innings of one-run ball.

Hays goes the other way

• No. 38 overall prospect Jack Flaherty (Cardinals’ No. 2) spun the first complete game of his career (seven innings) and moved to 3-0 as he led Triple-A Memphis to a win over Omaha in Game 1 of a doubleheader. The 22-year-old right hander gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits and struck out six while throwing 67 of his 95 pitches for strikes.

Flaherty finishes complete game

• No. 97 overall prospect Austin Riley (Braves’ No. 8) is swinging a scorching-hot bat for Double-A Mississippi. The 2 Men’s 1985 Chicago Bears 34 Walter Payton Mitchell and Ness Authentic Throwback Navy Blue Jersey 1-year-old, who went 3-for-3, is hitting .408 after his fourth straight multi-hit effort. Over those four games, Riley is 10-for-15 with six extra-base hits and five RBIs.

• No. 99 overall prospect Blake Rutherford (White Sox No. 7) continued his hot start and extended his hitting streak to six games, going 4-for-5 with Class A Advanced Winston-Salem. Rutherford, who is batting .404 through 11 games, also set a career high with four RBIs. Micker Adolfo (No. 10) also contributed to the win, hitting his third homer of the year.

Rutherford’s two-run single

Athletics No. 8 prospect Sean Murphy pushed his average to .409 with his fourth consecutive multi-hit performance for Double-A Midland. Murphy, who hit just .209 in 53 games with Midland last season, went 4-for-5 and is off to a particularly fast start at the plate. The 23-year-old has hits in nine of the 11 games he’s played in and has also racked up nine RBIs.

Murphy knocks out four hits

• Braves No. 10 prospect Joey Wentz was once again dominant for Class A Advanced Florida. Wentz retired the first five batters he faced on his way toward hurling five scoreless innings. The 20-year-old hasn’t given up a run in either of his past two starts (10 innings) and has allowed just one run all season. Wentz struck out six, including the final two batters he faced, and has now fanned 15 in 14 innings.

Cubs No. 3 prospect Oscar De La Cruz bounced back from a couple rough starts to spin a gem for Double-A Tennessee. The right-hander gave up 11 earned runs over six innings in his first two starts, but he showed no signs of struggle against Montgomery. De La Cruz dominated through six scoreless frames, surrendering just one hit and striking out six.

De La Cruz fans six

• Pirates prospects Calvin Mitchell (No. 16) and Travis MacGregor (No. 25) led Class A West Virginia to a 3-0 win over Asheville. Mitchell, who finished 2-for-4, provided all the offense with a three-run homer in the third while MacGregor did his part by pitching six scoreless innings. MacGregor, who struck out six and yielded three hits, has given up just one earned run over three starts this season.

Red Sox No. 11 prospect Josh Ockimey picked the perfect time — waiting until the bases were loaded — to hit his first homer of the season. The 22-year-old went 3-for-4 for Double-A Portland and put the game out of reach with a grand slam in the seventh.

Royals No. 25 prospect Chase Vallot snapped an 0-for-17 skid with a first-inning grand slam for Class A Advanced Wilmington. Vallot picked up a fifth RBI via a bases-loaded walk in the fourth, but is still having a tough time at the plate as he finished 1-for-5.

Angels No.  Mens 1994 Buffalo Bills 35th Anniversary Jim Kelly Mitchell and Ness Royal Blue Throwback Jersey 29 pr Vintage 1968 Mitchell and Ness Joe Namath New York Jets Throwback Jersey Cheap ospect Joe Gatto gave up five runs in three innings in his last start with Class A Advanced Inland Empire, but he bounced back in a big way against Lancaster. The 22-year-old right-hander fired 53 of his 79 pitches for strikes as he struck out nine and yielded three hits over six scoreless frames. Gatto struck out the side in the first and notched at least one strikeout in five of his six innings.

“I think you’re able to enjoy it a little bit more than a broken bat groundout or something like that,” Braun said. “It was definitely a cool way to accomplish a pretty special number.”

He’s the ninth active player and the 284th in Major League history to get to that plateau, matching Darryl Strawberry’s career mark. Braun was already second in Brewers history to Robin Yount’s 1,406 career RBIs.

Braun was limited to bench duty for a second straight game on Thursday because of a sore right calf, and he’s also missed time recently with back stiffness. But he remains a threat, with four of his first 12 hits this season clearing the fence, including a pair of go-ahead home runs in the ninth inning.

He said he  Men’s 1994 Miami Dolphins 13 Dan Marino 75th Anniversary Aqua Authentic Throwback Jersey expects to be back in the Brewers’ lineup when the series continues Friday.

“I’ve said many times that the biggest challenge in this game is longevity and consistency,” Braun said. “You can’t get to a number like that unless you’ve played for a while and had consistent success.

Video: MIA@MIL: Braun on reaching 1,000 career RBIs

“It also speaks to being fortunate to be on a lot of really good offensive teams. It’s a result of having really good teammates and getting a ton of opportunities. For five or six years, I had Prince Fielder hitting behind me, so people never wanted to walk me to get to him. You’re just getting a lot of opportunity.”

Thursday’s clout was Braun’s second career pinch-hit home run, and both have come against the Marlins. The other was a game-winning two-run shot in the ninth in Miami on June 3, 2011.

“It’s 300 homers, 1000 RBIs now. Big, round numbers,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. “You’re starting to get into what I think of as the longevity numbers. You have to be around and productive for quite a long time to start reaching these milestones.”

“For one, you have to play a long time to reach that goal,” Brewers center fielder Lorenzo Cain said. “He’s been a consistent, great hitter his entire career. I’m happy for him. W Men’s 1985 Chicago Bears 34 Walter Payton Mitchell and Ness Authentic Throwback Navy Blue Jersey e definitely need him to get to where we want to be. This is going to be a fun ride.”

“I wasn’t going nowhere last night,” Brinson said with a laugh.

There were handshakes and hugs for both players on Thursday, when the Br Vintage 1968 Mitchell and Ness Joe Namath New York Jets Throwback Jersey Cheap ewers and Marlins met under the dome at Miller Park for the start of a four-game series.

It’s too early to analyze the trade, in part because the Marlins made the deal with the future in mind, and because this season has not begun the way Yelich nor Brinson would have liked. Brinson, who spent a season and a half as the Brewers’ top prospect and made his Major League debut for Milwaukee last June, entered his homecoming in a 1-for-36 funk. Yelich has spent most of his first three weeks of his regular-season Brewers tenure on the disabled list with a right oblique injury.

• Marlins’ Top 30 prospects

Yelich returned to Milwaukee’s lineup on Wednesday against the Reds, boosting his early-season on-base percentage to .452 with a hit and a pair of walks while making a circus catch in his first start in center field for the Brewers. A day later, he spent time amid a gaggle of Marlins stretching on the field while Milwaukee finished batting practice.

“I’m obviously close with some of the guys over there,” Yelich said. “We’ve been through some stuff. But I don’t see it being any different or feeling any different during the games. It will be business as usual.”

Video: Yelich discusses on his return to the Brewers’ lineup

The Marlins are catching the Brewers on the back end of a spate of injuries. Yelich’s oblique was the biggest setback so far, but Eric Thames (groin), Ryan Braun (back) and primary catcher Manny Pina have also missed games for a team that entered the series 26th in the Majors with 3.37 runs per game. Pina will miss the series, but Thames and Yelich are back and Braun is getting close, having taken batting practice on Thursday.

“It’s been tough on us with injuries,” Yelich said. “That’s part of baseball season. It’s going to happen. It just happened for us out of the gate. But I think we did a good job of being able to weather it and getting through it as best we could.”

Brinson is also getting through it, and he took a big step forward on Thursday. After not starting either of the Marlins’ games on Monday and Tuesday at Yankee Stadium, Brinson hit a pair of home runs to center field off Brewers starter Chase Anderson in his first two at-bats of the series opener.

“Obviously, I was over there last year, and now, I’m with a different team,” Brinson said before the game. “Same mindset, kind of thing. Go out there, play hard, play my game. Get it going a little bit and help my team win.

“It’s going to be good playing against some guys I played with last year, but at the same time, when you step between those lines, it’s time to battle. I look forward to that.”

Video: MIA@MIL: Lewis Brinson discusses his recent struggles

Even with Brinson’s struggles, the Marlins are giving their top prospect every chance to succeed without being optioned to the Minors.

Last Friday, before the Marlins faced the Mets in Miami, Derek Jeter, the team’s chief executive officer, watched batting practice from the field. Brinson spoke briefly with Jeter.

“Just keep swinging. It will come,” Brinson said Jeter told him. “‘There’s a reason why you’re up here’ type of conversation. He has total confidence in me, and obviously, a great guy to talk to. Him being the figure he is, just to have him around, around the cage and speaking to us, and being very open about everything, it means a lo Men’s 1994 Miami Dolphins 13 Dan Marino 75th Anniversary Aqua Authentic Throwback Jersey t. His words are very encouraging. He told me to keep swinging.”

While Brinson works on adjustments with Miami, Yelich is making them in snowy Milwaukee.

“It’s been a little different from Miami or Southern California, where I grew up,” Yelich said. “But it’s been a fun and unique experience. People are saying it doesn’t usually snow this much this time of year. Luckily, we have the dome.”

Overall, Aguilar (1.0 Vintage 1968 Mitchell and Ness Joe Namath New York Jets Throwback Jersey Cheap 37) and Thames (1.013) entered Friday’s game leading the Brewers in OPS, and their first basemen, including Braun, led the Majors by more than 100 points with a .684 slugging percentage and also led with a .431 weighted on-base average.

“From my perspective, they’ve both picked up where they left off,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. “They were both very productive last year, and they’re off to very productive starts this year. Nothing has really changed from that perspective. We went in with a little different plan, and through some injuries and stuff, things have changed. Jesus has really taken advantage of that.”

Even with the preseason plan of using Braun at first base against left-handers, Thames was going to get his at-bats against right-handers. Aguilar, however, was unsure whether he would make the Opening Day roster, much less get regular playing time.

But including a three-hit effort Thursday that included a pair of doubles, he leads the Brewers with a .456 wOBA.

“Look, Jesus is certainly earning at-bats,” Counsell said.

Video: MIA@MIL: Aguilar lines RBI double to left

Of the plan for Braun to play some first base, Counsell said, “It was best-laid plans, but the plan never happened. You have to keep your options open a little bit and understand that you don’t know what’s going to happen the next day sometimes. That’s why [a player’s] outlook and attitude are important, because it can change on a dime.

“When opportunity hits, you have to be ready for it.”

Progress for Pina
Catcher Manny Pina tested his right calf injury with some pregame baserunning Friday, under the watch of Counsell, third-base coach Ed Sedar and assistant athletic trainer Rafael Freitas. Pina is eligible for reinstatement from the 10-day disabled list on Monday, an off-day before a three-city road trip.

Pina should come off the DL at some point during that trip, Counsell said.

“He did well. He did really well,” Counsell said. “He probably ran at 80-85 percent. We put him through a pretty good test. Probably o Mens 1994 Buffalo Bills 35th Anniversary Jim Kelly Mitchell and Ness Royal Blue Throwback Jersey ne more series of tests, but we’re really pointing at good signs. … I don’t know if I’ll commit today to that first day [of the road trip], but he is on track to be ready for that road trip.”

The Brewers’ other injured catcher, Step Men’s 1994 Buffalo Bills 35th Anniversary Jim Kelly Mitchell and Ness Royal Blue Throwback Jersey hen Vogt, is also making progress from a strained right shoulder. Barring a setback, he is expected to head to Arizona sometime during the Brewers’ road trip to compile at-bats in extended spring training before a Minor League rehab assignment with stops at Double-A Biloxi and Triple-A Colorado Springs.

At the moment, it appears Vogt will hit the original target of being Major League-ready by the second week of May. At that point, the Brewers will face some decisions with their catching corps.

MILWAUKEE — It wasn’t just runs that Brewers manager Craig Counsell was waiting for. It was pressure. Put pressure on an opponent inning after inning, Counsell kept saying, and the runs will come.

In a 12-3 win over the Marlins at Miller Park punctuated by a seven-run sixth inning, Lorenzo Cain reached safely four times and scored four runs, Jesus Aguilar drove in three runs and Ryan Braun came off the bench to hit a three-run home run for 1,000 career RBIs, giving the Brewers their best offensive night at home since September 2016.

The Brewers have won three straight games for the first time since sweeping the Padres in the opening series.

“For me, [pressure] is always the key. If you can keep doing that, you’ll break through eventually,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. “We finally broke through in that sixth inning pretty good.”

Milwaukee overcame a huge homecoming for their former top prospect Men’s 1985 Chicago Bears 34 Walter Payton Mitchell and Ness Authentic Throwback Navy Blue Jersey , outfielder Lewis Brinson, who homered off winning pitcher Chase Anderson in each of his first two at-bats. Brinson, traded to Miami with three other premium prospects in January for Christian Yelich, had a .131 average and no extra-base hits entering the night, but he tied the game at 1 to lead off the third inning and gave Miami a 3-2 lead with a two-run shot in the fifth.

The Brewers had answers, mostly bunched in a 10-run outburst between a go-ahead fifth inning and a seven-run sixth, which was interrupted by Marlins reliever Odrisamer Despaigne‘s forearm injury. Junichi Tazawa took over with a 2-2 count on Cain and surrendered a run-scoring double that extended Milwaukee’s lead to 6-3. Four batters later, with two outs, Aguilar hit a two-run double, and Braun followed with a three-run home run. The next batter, Orlando Arcia, made it back-to-back homers.

Video: MIA@MIL: Cain lines RBI double off left-field wall

In the sixth inning alone, the Brewers scored more runs than in all but one of their first 19 games — an 8-6 win over the Padres on March 30 in which Braun’s go-ahead, three-run homer capped a five-run ninth inning.

Entering Thursday, the Brewers were 26th in the Majors with 3.37 runs per game.

“Sometimes you just need one day like this  Mitchell and Ness Dan Fouts Los Angeles Chargers Vintage 1984 Throwback Football Jersey Cheap to get everybody going,” Braun said. “We know that we’re a better offense than we’ve shown to this point. It’s a matter of going out there and doing it.”

The Brewers’ 12 runs were the most they’d scored in a home game since a Sept. 6, 2016, win over the Cubs. Along the way, Milwaukee set season highs with 13 hits and seven walks.

“The walks are a lot of times, to me, what defines the pressure,” Counsell said. “The walks, he’s throwing pitches. We’re not chasing. It’s disciplined. It’s tough innings. The walks are a huge part of i Vintage 1968 Mitchell and Ness Joe Namath New York Jets Throwback Jersey Cheap t, and they’ve been a bigger part of our offense the last few days.”

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Aguilar’s two-out knocks: Aguilar began the season as the Brewers’ third-string first baseman, but he’s making the most out of limited at-bats for the second straight season. He matched his career high with three hits, all with two outs. They included a go-ahead double in the fifth inning and his two-run single in the big sixth, which extended the Brewers’ lead to a comfortable  Men’s 1994 Buffalo Bills 35th Anniversary Jim Kelly Mitchell and Ness Royal Blue Throwback Jersey 8-3.

“I thought [Aguilar’s] two-out hit there was the one that really broke it open,” Counsell said.

Said Aguilar: “I just have to wait for my turn, and whenever I’ve gotten my turn, I’ve been able to do my job. … [Two-out hits] definitely help an offense. We’ve all felt that eventually it was going to come.”

Grand milestone: Braun, limited to bench duty by a sore right calf, delivered the dagger with his second career pinch-hit home run. It made him the 284th player in Major League history to reach 1,000 career RBIs.

“It was definitely a cool way to accomplish a pretty special number,” Braun said. More >

Miley’s agent and the Brewers negotiated a compromise in which the team paid Miley a $100,000 retention bonus and agreed to again offer his release once Miley reached the end of his rehab. Tuesday’s start represented a big step toward that decision date.

Video: OAK@MIL: Miley leaves game with injury in the 5th

Miley allowed two runs (none earned) on four hits in 2 2/3 innings for Biloxi, with two strikeouts and no walks.

“Really, ‘healthy’ was the report,” Counsell said. “He felt fine; anxious for more. So he’s in a good spot to continue on. He threw 37 pitches, and we’ll ramp him up quickly. We feel like we can be fairly aggressive moving up the pitch count. We’re not there yet, but I think — we’re not there yet — but he had a good base under him, so we’ll move rapidly.”

Video: Counsell gives update on Wade Miley’s rehab

Miley will advance to 55-60 pitches next time out, Counsell said. After that, the team will decide how many more Minor League starts he needs, if any.

Since the Brewers have come this far with Miley, it’s unlikely they would get him healthy again only to release him. Two of the pitchers currently in the rotation have Minor League options: Brent Suter and Junior Guerra.

“It doesn’t do me any good [to speculate],” Counsell said. “But that’s why we agreed to this, to get him there. We have to get him healthy.”

• Nearing two weeks into his stint on the disabled list, closer Corey Knebel said he is still feeling the effects of his left hamstring injury. He mentioned optimism about a four-week timeline the day the Brewers placed him on the DL, but he may have been referring when he hoped to get back on the mound, not pitch in a game, Counsell said.

Corey Dickerson never expected to be “The New Guy.” But two months after a surprise move to the Pirates, he is one of the National League Central’s most impactful fresh faces.

While other division newcomers are still searching for their footing, Dickerson has been productive from the start for the Bucs. That’s impressive, given that the phone call from the Rays informing him he’d been designated for assignment on Feb. 18 was utterly unexpected.

After all, Dickerson was coming off a .282/.325/.490 season with Tampa Bay, with 27 homers in 150 games, plus an appearance on the American League All-Star team. A trade would not have totally shocked him. But designated for assignment?

“It’s hard to stomach,” Dickerson said. “At the time, I was caught off guard.”

The Rays eventually traded Dickerson to Pittsburgh to be the Pirates’ regular left fielder.

“Whenever it finally happened, I was just excited,” he said. “All I’m worried about is competing. I’m a very competitive person. I always try to turn the page quickly.”

Here’s a look at how other notable page-turners are doing so far.

Brewers
Who’s the new guy?
Outfielder Christian Yelich

Video: MIL@SD: Yelich li Vintage 1968 Mitchell and Ness Joe Namath New York Jets Throwback Jersey Cheap ghts it up at plate with five hits

How’s it going so far? Yelich was off to a terrific start, including a five-hit game in San Diego in the third game of the season and a game-tying home run with two strikes and two outs in a stunning come-from-behind win over the Cardinals in the Brewers’ secon Men’s 1994 Buffalo Bills 35th Anniversary Jim Kelly Mitchell and Ness Royal Blue Throwback Jersey d home game. But he suffered a right oblique injury the next night and landed on the disabled list until his return to the starting lineup Wednesday against the Reds. After fielding questions all spring about Milwaukee’s crowded outfield, the depth has proven useful so far.

What’s on deck? Some familiar faces. Yelich returned to action in time for a one-game tune-up before his first four games against the Marlins, who drafted him in the first round in 2010 and gave Yelich his break in the big leagues. Miami opens a four-game series at Miller Park on Thursday night.

Number to know: Five. That’s how many seasons the Brewers have contractual control of Yelich, which explains why they were willing to part with four premium prospects — outfielders Lewis Brinson and Monte Harrison, infielder Isan Diaz and pitcher Jordan Yamamoto — to get him. Brinson is off to a slow start for Miami (.316 OPS through his first 16 games and 66 plate appearances), but he will get a chance to do some damage against his former team this weekend.

Cardinals
Who’s the new guy?
 Outfielder Marcell Ozuna

Video: STL@MIL: Ozuna crushes a monster 479-ft. home run

How’s it going so far? Ozuna’s .673 OPS through his first 16 games with the Cardinals says he is off to a slow start, but at least he has been steady, with a .271 batting average and at least one hit in 12 of those games. What has not come yet is the power. In 11 games after a monstrous home run at Miller Park on April 3, Ozuna had only two extra-base hits.

What’s on deck? History says the power will come with warmer weather. May is traditionally Ozuna’s strongest month, with his best home run total (24) and OPS (.871) of any month.

Number to know: Mitchell and Ness Dan Fouts Los Angeles Chargers Vintage 1984 Throwback Football Jersey Cheap  48.1 percent, which was Ozuna’s hard-hit percentage through his first 16 games. It was 39.1 percent last season, when Ozuna drilled 37 home runs for the Marlins, won an NL Silver Slugger Award and garnered NL MVP Award votes. The extra-base hits will come.

Cubs
Who’s the new guy?
Right-handed pitcher Yu Darvish

Video: CHC@MIL: Darvish dazzles in  Mitchell and Ness Dan Fouts Los Angeles Chargers Vintage 1984 Throwback Football Jersey Cheap second start

How’s it going so far? Not great, but we are talking about three starts. Darvish spun a gem against the Brewers on April 7 at Miller Park, when he struck out nine and limited Milwaukee to one run on two hits and a walk in six innings of a win. But in his other two starts — against the Marlins and Braves — Darvish surrendered nine earned runs on 14 hits in nine innings, with a pedestrian ratio of eight strikeouts to six walks.

What’s on deck? Warmer weather, hopefully. Darvish’s most recent start against the Braves was his home debut, and he wore short sleeves for a 42-degree first pitch. His next scheduled start on Saturday in Denver won’t be much warmer, and then it’s back to Wrigley Field for a rematch with the Brewers.

“I was surprised how cold  Vintage 1968 Mitchell and Ness Joe Namath New York Jets Throwback Jersey Cheap it was, but I told myself I’ll perform better if the weather is colder,” Darvish said. “When I was on the mound, I didn’t feel any cold.”

Number to know: 94.3 mph, the average velocity of Darvish’s first 120 four-seam fastballs in 2018, according to Statcast™. That’s identical to his average in ’17 — a positive sign, considering it is so early in the season, and Darvish’s most recent start came in the cold.

Pirates
Who’s the new guy?
Dickerson

Video: CIN@PIT: Dickerson lifts a home run to right in 5th

How’s it going so far? Considering that Dickerson has been one of the most valuable players in the league so far, pretty well. He entered play Thursday leading the NL in Baseball-Reference.com’s version of wins above replacement and third in Fangraphs’ version. Dickerson was a perfect fit for the Pirates after they traded Andrew McCutchen to the Giants, and he has posted an .878 OPS through 15 games.

What’s on deck? Since Dickerson has spread his production around — he’s had multihit games against the Twins, Reds, Cubs and Marlins — there is hope that his production is sustainable. But the Bucs start a four-game series in Philadelphia on Thursday against a Phillies team that ranks fifth in the NL with a 3.46 ERA.

Number to know: 1.0. That’s Dickerson’s NL-leading defensive WAR, according to Baseball-Reference, through 15 games. That q Men’s 1985 Chicago Bears 34 Walter Payton Mitchell and Ness Authentic Throwback Navy Blue Jersey ualifies as a surprise, since Dickerson is not known for his defense.

Reds
Who’s the new guy?
Right-hander Jared Hughes

Video: CIN@PHI: Hughes gets out of a jam with big K

How’s it going so far? The NL Central journeyman has been a nice addition so far, with a 2.25 ERA in a team-high 10 appearances for the Reds. That he is their only new addition (another relief pickup, David Hernandez, is on the DL) speaks to Cincinnati’s commitment to developing their own young players during something of a rebuilding period.

What’s on deck? A heavy workload, if history holds. Hughes has pitched in at least 63 games for the Pirates and Brewers in five of the past six seasons, including 67 appearances in each of the past two years. After appearing in 10 of the Reds’ first 18 games, he’s well on the way to doing it again.

Number to know: Zero. That’s how many home runs Hughes has surrendered so far, a positive sign for a pitcher known for his good sinke Mens 1994 Buffalo Bills 35th Anniversary Jim Kelly Mitchell and Ness Royal Blue Throwback Jersey r.

Mitchell and Ness Throwback NFL Jersey Eric Thames hits another April home run in win

MILWAUKEE — Sitting in the bullpen with time to kill in the early innings, do Brewers relievers kick around ideas about how they would attack Eric Thames when he’s rolling like this?

Not really, said Jacob Barnes. They were asking a different question after a 2-0 win over the Reds on Wednesday at Miller Park felt like deja vu all over again.

“We wonder why they pitch to him in the first place,” Barnes said of the Reds. “We’re like, ‘Wait, you haven’t learned the first [12] times?’

“I don’t know what it is, but he’s figured them out, and we enjoy seeing it because he produces runs. That’s what we like.”

Video: CIN@MIL: Davies, Barnes talk 2-0 win over Reds

In a near-carbon copy of a Brewers victory the night before, Thames hit another two-run home run to supply all of the offense in a second straight three-hit shutout of the Reds. The games even ended in similar fashion, with a two-inning save.

This time, Zach Davies started and pitched into the seventh inning before Dan Jennings and Barnes closed the Brewers’ first back-to-back shutouts at hitter-friendly Miller Park since the team won three in a row against the Marlins from July 19-21, 2013.

Josh Hader on Tuesday and Barnes on Wednesday delivered Milwaukee’s first back-to-back saves of at least two innings apiece since Chuck Crim and Dan Plesac in 1990.

“Pretty much, the last two [games] are because of our pitching,” Thames said. “The offense hasn’t been hitting on all cylinders, like it usually is. That’s how it’s going to be throughout the year. We pick them up and they pick us up sometimes.”

Video: CIN@MIL: Barnes K’s Pennington for six-out save

For the second straight game, Thames accounted for the game’s only runs with one swing. His two-run homer in the third inning against Reds starter Tyler Mahle was Thames’ 10th against Cincinnati in the past two Aprils and gave him 12 total homers against the Reds over the last two years. That matched Yankees slugger Aaron Judge (vs. Baltimore) for the most home runs against a single opponent since the start of 2017.

“I’m not getting too caught up in all that stuff,” Thames said. “Just trying to have a good at-bat, quality ABs. I just got a pitch to hit and I didn’t miss it.”

Six of Thames’ last eight hits have cleared the fence. He leads the Brewers with seven home runs this season and has hit 18 and counting in April over the past two years. Bryce Harper is second in the Majors with 17 home runs in the past two Aprils entering the Nationals’ game against the Mets on Wedne Mitchell and Ness Dan Fouts Los Angeles Chargers Vintage 1984 Throwback Football Jersey Cheap sday night.

“It’s his month,” Davies said of Thames.

“[Thames] is their offense against us the last two days with the home runs,” Reds manager Bryan Price said. “We’ve made some good pitches against him this series too, but when we make a mistake, he makes us pay for it. There are those times where you just have to pitch to him.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Double the pleasure: The Brewers added three more errors to their Major League-leading total (21), including Jonathan Villar‘s boot of an easy Billy Hamilton grounder in the seventh inning. That gave the Reds runners at the corners wi Men’s 1994 Buffalo Bills 35th Anniversary Jim Kelly Mitchell and Ness Royal Blue Throwback Jersey th one out in a two-run game, and prompted a call for reliever Jennings to replace Davies with left-handed hitter Jesse Winker coming up. Jennings induced an inning-ending double play to keep the shutout bid alive.

“We gave them some extra chances today, for sure,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. “These were kind of easy mistakes; I’d call them unforced errors. We got through them today but they’re going to bite you. We’ve got to make those plays.”

Video: CIN@MIL: Jennings escapes first-and-third jam in 7th

Early trouble: Davies held the Reds scoreless on three hits and two walks over 6 1/3 innings for his second quality start, but first, he had to navigate first-inning trouble. Reds leadoff man Winker opened the game with a double and took third when center fielder Christian Yelich bobbled the baseball for an error. Davies walked Joey Votto on four carefully-placed pitches, but he retired the other three batters he faced without allowing Winker to budge.

“It kind of sets the tone for the game, that I know I’m getting some soft contact and being able to put the ball where I want it,” Davies said.

SOUND SMART
With All-Star closer Corey Knebel on the disabled list, Counsell is getting creative with save opportunities. The Brewers already have a trio of two-inning saves this season, the first time they have had that many since 2008, but they have a way to go to match the club record. The 1982 Brewers, led by future Hall of Fame reliever Rollie Fingers, registered 21 multi-inning save Vintage 1968 Mitchell and Ness Joe Namath New York Jets Throwback Jersey Cheap s.

“I just used the eighth inning as the guide there,” Counsell said of sending Barnes back for the ninth. “I thought he handled the eighth inning efficiently, filling up the strike zone, so he could get through the ninth and still have really effective stuff.”

HE SAID IT
“I’m always a competitor. I always like to go after guys. But he’s on a tear, and it’s tough to get him out right now. It’ll be interesting to see what guys do for the rest of the year. — Davies, asked whether he would pitch to Thames right now

UP NEXT
Lorenzo Cain is expected back atop the lineup following a scheduled off-day, and Yelich will be reunited with his former team when the Brewers host the Marlins for the start of a four-game series on Thursday. On the same day they agreed to sign free agent Cain to a five-year deal, the Brewers acquired Yelich in a blockbuster trade with Miami for a package of prospects led by Lewis Brinson. Both tea Mens 1994 Buffalo Bills 35th Anniversary Jim Kelly Mitchell and Ness Royal Blue Throwback Jersey ms are waiting for the trade to pay dividends; Brinson is off to a slow start for the Marlins, and Yelich just returned to the Brewers lineup on Wednesday following a stint on the disabled list for a right oblique injury. “I thought they really went at it the right way with one guy sliding,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. “They weren’t going to run into each other. There are going to be those balls — and they’re always dangerous — that have three guys going to the same spot. Yelich made a heck of a play; I think it just kind of landed on his leg and popped r Vintage 1968 Mitchell and Ness Joe Namath New York Jets Throwback Jersey Cheap ight up to him.”

Yelich was making his first Brewers start in center field in his first game off the disabled list for a right oblique strain. He’d already been charged with an error in the first inning on a misplay of Jesse Wi Mens 1994 Buffalo Bills 35th Anniversary Jim Kelly Mitchell and Ness Royal Blue Throwback Jersey nker‘s leadoff double, but he atoned for that mistake an inning later with an assist from Perez.

At the plate, Yelich was 1-for-2 with a single and pair of walks. The only time he was retired was a big spot, batting with the bases loaded and two outs after the Reds opted to have starter Tyler Mahle intentionally walk hot-hitting Eric Thames to face Yelich instead.

“That’s not a comfortable feeling either. Yelich is one of the better young hitters in the game,” Reds manager Bryan Price said. “Just for whatever reason, Thames has hurt us so many times in the last year-plus. Better to have somebody else up there in that situation to have to do the damage as opposed to have to face Thames.”

It was the right move. Mahle fell behind in the count, 3-0, but he came back to strike Yelich out, ending the threat.

Next up for Yelich is four games against his former team, the Marlins, who are at Miller Park beginning Thursday night at 7:10 p.m. CT.
